Although not as beautiful and dignified as Dubrovnik or Split, Croatia's capital is also worth visiting. It has an interesting one, not a big city old town at all, with several valuable churches and a large number of museums and galleries, with an impressive collection of valuable Croatian works of art. The mountainous surroundings of the capital are suitable for hiking. There are historic towns nearby (Samobor, Varazdin), locks (Thracoan, Veliki Tabor), the most important Marian sanctuary in the country (Marija Bistrica), spas (Varaźdinske Toplice), and… center of the globe (Ludbreg).
Main attractions in Zagreb:
• Zagreb's old town – Several valuable churches, great museums and galleries.
• Medvednica Nature Park – Hike to the top of Slieme, to the Veternica cave and the Medvedgrad castle.
• Croatian Zagorje – A land of green hills between Zagreb and the Slovenian border. The shelter, castles and the most important Croatian Marian sanctuary Marija Bistrica with a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary.
• Varazdin – A quiet baroque town with a nice castle and interesting events. For relaxation, swimming in Lake Brigadirsko or Varażdinskie Toplice thermal baths.
ZAGREB
City buildings, shaped to a large extent according to the canons in force in the Imperial-Royal Empire, has nothing to do with Mediterranean architecture. There are approx. 800 thousand. people (there are also figures for over a million), co – by Croatian standards – is an impressive number (Split has only the second in this respect 174 thousand. residents). In addition, the city's population is constantly growing, for the people of the provinces come here for bread, mainly from Slavonia, which was impoverished as a result of the last war. Zagreb is the main administrative center, industrial, communication and university (more than 50 thousand. students), clearly dominant over the inland part of the country (the coast has its own rules).
Car
All Croatian motorways lead to Zagreb. Most often, people come from Poland from the side of Maribor (way, which in the vicinity of Kra-pina turns into a highway) or from the border crossing Gorićan / Letenye (motorway for almost the entire section). Traveling from Zagreb to the seaside, you reach Karlovac via the highway, from where you can go west, towards Rijeka, or south, to Plitvice and Zadar. Coming from Zagreb to the south coast, it is worth using the new highway Al, starting near the village of Bosiljevo west of Karlovac and leading, among others. via Ogulin and Gospić to Zadar and then almost to Šibenik. Another important route, although not very useful for a Polish tourist, it leads from Zagreb to Lubiana. For these, who want to visit Slavonia, its eastern extension will be important – highway to Slavonski Brod and further towards the Serbian border. It runs through sparsely populated areas, where practically nothing limits the speed.
Driving around Zagreb is a light nightmare, which does not deviate too much from this, what is happening in large Polish cities. The access to the center is marked, but parking is difficult due to the greater number of people willing than parking spaces.
Plane
Domestic airlines operated by Croatia Airlines connect Zagreb with Dubrovnik, Splitem, Zadarem, Pula and the village of Boi on the island of Brac.
Train
National trains provide connections to major cities throughout Croatia (to some, e.g.. Dubrovnik, special railway buses arrive). You can reach, among others. do: Rivers (3-6 calls a day; 96 kn), Puli (do 4 connections; 127 kn), Zadar (do 4 connections, change in Knin; 134-149 kn), Split (3-4 connections; 138-153 kn), Varaždin (more than 10 connections; 47 kn), Koprivnica (ok. 10 connections; 41 kn) and Osijek (ok. 10 connections; 96 kn). During the season, promotions are organized on the lines connecting the capital with the Adriatic Sea, e.g.. them Splitem, Šibenik and Zadar.
Railway station (Railway station) it occupies a large historic building on Kralja Tomislav's Trg 12, ok. kilometer south of Trgu bana Jelaćić. They work in it: restaurant, fast food bars, travel agencies etc.. Luggage room (wardrobe) is around the clock.
Bus
You can travel to almost every major city from Zagreb. Every hour or so there are connections to: Rijeka (80-130 kn), Splitem (115-143 kn), Plitvice (48-80 kn), Zadarem (97— 157 kn) or Varażdin (ok. 50 kn). Such places are reached a little less frequently, how: Anyway (114—161 kn), Spouse-shall (127-150 kn), Rovinj (ok. 130-182 kn), Dubrovnik (160-189 kn) or Osijek (96-126 kn). There are also a few buses, e.g.. do: Poreč (100-159 kn), Novi Vinodolski (ok. 94-113 kn), to the islands of Krk (127-144 kn), Rab (ok. 140 kn) and Pag (133-172 kn).
Bus Station (bus station) is located at ul. Drzic, less than 2 km southeast of Trgu bana Jelacic (access see. Public transport). There are numerous amenities for tourists: 24/7 cash registers, a lot of shops, restaurant, office, ATM, etc.. Luggage room (wardrobe) works non-stop, but her services are quite expensive (1,20 kn / hour. for average luggage).
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
You don't need to use public transport while exploring the city - you can easily get everywhere on foot. This, who do not like walking, the tram line is worth recommending #6, which connects Trg bana Jelaćić with the railway and bus stations. There is also a tram between Trg bana Jelaćić and the train station #13, and the bus – #8. Tickets can be bought at the kiosk (6,50 kn), possibly at the driver (8kn). A day ticket is advantageous (18 kn).
Cableways play a significant role. The Uspinjaća car runs from ul. Tomiceva, łącząc Donji grad and Gradec (6.30-21.00 co 10 min; 3 kn / person, the entire cabin 27 kn). For those looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, Sljemenska Żićara will be useful (8.00-20.00 every hour; 17 kn return, 11 kn one way), queue taking you to Sljeme (1030 m n.p.m.), the highest peak of the Medvednica massif adjacent to Zagreb. Its lower station is in the hamlet of Granieani (access from the center by trams #8 or 14 to end, hence #15 to the end and a pedestrian tunnel). Taxis Stops in the city center include. at the train station, the. Praska, in the vicinity of the National Theater and at Ilica. One hour of a taxi stand costs money 80 kn.
